Ibuprofen,
or Nonsteroidal
Antiinflammatory
Drugs (NSAIDs) are
used to treat
moderate pain,
inflammation and
fever; specifically,
rheumatoid
arthritis, and
osteoarthritis. It
is also used to
allevate mild to
moderate pain such
as headaches, sports
injuries, menstrual cramps and
other aches and
pains. Aspirin is
used to inhibit the
clotting of blood
and prevent strokes
and heart attacks by
thinning the blood
for people at risk. NSAIDs can also be
found in many cold
and allergy
remedies.
Over the counter
NSAIDs include:
Aspirin, Aleve,
Motrin, Advil,
Mediprin, Nuprin and
Motrin IB. |
Side Effects
Frequency of
side effects
with NSAIDs
varies from
drug to
drug. The
most common
complaints
include
nausea,
vomiting,
constipation,
decreased
appetite,
diarrhea,
rash,
headaches,
dizziness
and
drowiness.
Other
complaints
have
included
fluid
rentention
leading to
edema. But
the most
serious of
side effects
is kidney
failure,
ulcers and
prolonged
bleeding
after
surgery or
an injury. |

Allergic
Reaction &
Allergies
Some people
who are
allergic to
NSAIDs may
develop
shortness of
breath.
People with
asthma are
at higher
risk for
more serious
allergic
reactions to
NSAIDS.
Children and
teenagers
who have
been given
NSAIDS for
chicken pox
or influenza
have been
associated
with the
development
of Reyes
syndrome. |

Dependence
The biggest
problem with
NSAIDs is
the self
medicating
and over use
which could
contribute
to ulcers,
upper
gastrointestinal
bleeding and
in some
cases,
death. Some
users
experience
dyspepsia
which have
caused many
trips to the
emergency
room. |
